Blueberry Milkshake

What occurred during this school year? It feels like only yesterday that I was leaving my elder daughters off for their first day of preschool, and now it's almost summer break.

You've heard that time flies! Anyway, we all need cool treats to beat the summer heat, and this could be my new favorite.

It's a blueberry milkshake that contains 70% fewer calories than the original version.

Milkshakes are delicious, but they are also one of the most caloric frozen desserts.

A milkshake from an ice cream shop can contain over 700 calories and 18 grams of fat due to the use of whole milk and premium ice cream.

In comparison, this blueberry smoothie contains 220 calories and 5 grams of fat, which is a significant improvement.

The first step was to reduce calories and fat by using light ice cream and 1% milk. I didn't use skim milk because it makes the milkshake little frosty.

The next stage was to replace some of the ice cream with frozen berries; with less ice cream and more fruit, the calories decreased considerably.

I used blueberries, but you could use any frozen berry you have available. A little honey balances out the sharpness of the frozen berries, because this is still a dessert, right?
