Udhayanidhi leads Chennai monsoon preparations as DMK seeks to prevent 2023 disaster.

Before the northeast monsoon, which will likely hit the city in two months

the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been unclogging drains, cleaning pipes, and testing dewatering pumps.

Despite being an annual event, this time is different.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's son, is directly directing GCC's monsoon readiness as the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is still fighting with mismanagement claims following last year's Northeast Monsoon downpour.

Since 16 August, the Tamil Nadu minister of youth welfare and sports development has held two monsoon readiness meetings at the Ripon Building

the municipal corporation office in Chennai, a GCC official told ThePrint.

Cyclone Michaung caused torrential rainfall in Chennai in December 2023, killing 17.

A six-member central delegation that examined the city after the downpour lauded the state administration for its swift response

but Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the state for not adopting preventive steps before the monsoon.
